Register as an Dietitian
Wednesday 21st April 2010
Parents who feed their children a vegan diet have been issued a warning by a dietician.
Helen Wilcock, who specialises in paediatric nutrition, said there is a risk that youngsters brought up on such food can suffer deficiencies, the Guardian reports.
The expert noted that kids who lack meat and dairy in their diets can fail to get enough vitamin D, calcium, iron and vitamin B12.
Mothers and fathers should therefore make sure their offspring are given supplements, she added.
Ms Wilcock went on to state: "If a child eats meat and fish, it's easy to get all the right amino acids."
However, those who rely on getting protein from pulses may not have the necessary variety of such acids, she noted.
Recently, fellow dietician Vanessa Hansen noted that it is important for people to eat breakfast because a failure to do so can result in people snacking on unhealthy food.
