People with radiography jobs in a UK hospital have begun using a new technique.
Staff at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital say that a single shot of radiotherapy can now be used in place of a six-week course for breast cancer sufferers, the Hampshire Chronicle reports.
The method was initially trialled at the centre - which is located on Romsey Road and is run by the Winchester and Eastleigh Healthcare NHS Trust - in the autumn of 2008.
Patients who receive it are given one dose of radiation which is intended to kill any remaining cancerous cells during surgery.
According to experts, the treatment has a better cosmetic result, is less arduous for women and does less damage to the rest of the breast than more traditional techniques.
Consultant surgeon Dick Rainsbury commented: "Everyone is very excited about the results.
"We can now see a time when this treatment will become the norm for many breast cancer patients."
He added that the development is "very important" because the method is a "much better experience" for patients.
