A group of biomedical scientists have claimed that taking vitamin and calcium supplements can reduce people's risks of developing breast cancer.
The team, which presented its findings at the American Association for Cancer Research's Annual Meeting 2010, suggested that such things can act to enhance DNA repair capacity.
Dr Jaime Matta, professor in the Ponce School of Medicine in Puerto Rico, pointed out that when the ability of DNA to recover from changes is comprised, mutations can occur that lead to cancer.
The study involved 268 women with the disease and 457 healthy controls.
Dr Matta remarked: "We're not talking about mega doses of these vitamins and calcium supplements, so this is definitely one way to reduce risk."
According to Cancer Research UK, the medical condition is the most common form of cancer in the UK and nearly 45,700 female patients were diagnosed with it over the course of 2007.
