Register as an Dietitian
Friday 16th April 2010
Consuming a diet which is rich in high glycemic index (GI) carbohydrates may increase women's risk of heart problems, meaning they could be more likely to require the services of someone with a cardiac physiology job.
This is according to research published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, which suggested that women who eat a lot of foods such as white bread, pizza and rice may be at greater risk of coronary heart disease.
Responding to the findings, registered dietician at the British Dietetic Association Nigel Denby said they were interesting.
However, it is important not to make a categorical statement on the issue just yet, he added.
The expert went on to suggest that everyone should be opting for lower GI foods, such as fruits, pasta and vegetables.
In the UK, 25 per cent of men and 29 per cent of women meet the government's 'five a day' guidelines of consuming this number or more portions of fruit and vegetables over a 24-hour period, the NHS Information Centre suggests.
