Register as an Dietitian
Thursday 15th April 2010
Food is too abundant in modern western society, an expert has claimed.
According to Sue Baic, a registered dietician and senior lecturer in nutrition and public health at the University of Bristol, people eat without awareness of what they are doing.
She said: "People graze all the time, our food culture these days is such that food is available all over the place and people will just pick it up and eat it without even noticing."
Trying to break this habit is important, the expert went on to note.
Ms Baic added that there is evidence that low glycaemic index carbohydrates such as porridge are good at keeping hunger at bay.
Her comments follow the release of research conducted by weight management firm Jenny Craig, which suggested that almost 85 per cent of adults eat unconsciously.
This was despite the fact that three-quarters of people polled wanted to lose weight.
