Biomedical scientists make kidney disease discovery

A team of biomedical scientists have made a discovery concerning the causes of kidney disease.
Published in Nature Genetics, the study suggested that around 20 genes could help to explain the causes of the medical problem.
The researchers' work was based on the analysis of the genomes of 23,182 Europeans, as well as additional assessments of 16,427 individuals.
Responding to the findings, Dr Jim Wilson, a population geneticist at the University of Edinburgh, said they could lead to a greater understanding of condition.
He remarked: "I think in the course of time this will be shown to be a major discovery which has the potential to revolutionise the understanding of kidney disease."
Dr Wilson went on to state that this particular area of medical science has been neglected compared with some other diseases that are more famous.
He identified this study as the first "very large" such undertaking to report on chronic kidney disease.
