New gadget 'could help speech therapists treat autistic kids'

A new gadget could help health professionals with roles as speech and language therapists treat children who suffer from autism.
Called the LENA Autism Screening Service, the device is intended to reduce the time it takes to detect the condition, the Daily Mail reports
It is designed to pick up signs of the problem early and, according to the publication, this is important because research indicates that the sooner autism is detected, the better a child responds to treatment.
Autism spectrum disorders are uncommon in the UK but not rare, with NHS figures suggesting they affect around one in 100 youngsters. Boys are more likely to have them than girls.
The screening machine is designed to record a whole day's worth of a child's language, with the information subsequently passed through a special computer program that compares it with other people who have already been diagnosed with the condition.
It has been shown to be around 90 per cent accurate in its detection among toddlers and is currently on sale in the US, although there are plans to bring it over the UK.
