Government proposals for generic drug substitutions have been met with opposition by those in pharmacy jobs.
The Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (RSPGB) has condemned the plans as merely a short-term measure, Pulse reports.
A consultation was carried out by the Department of Health and the RSPBG expressed concerns that the relationships between pharmacists and GPs could be damaged as a result of the "extremely complex" options.
"There are concerns about liability and the potential for misconduct and fraud because of communication failure between healthcare professionals," the body was quoted as saying.
Meanwhile, the British Medical Association - of which more than two-thirds of UK doctors are members - warned that patients could experience harmful side effects.
Problems could be caused if drugs are substituted for ones which are "not sufficiently bioequivalent", it argued, questioning whether legal action could be taken against the prescriber if there is an adverse reaction to a drug.
