Hospital 'slashes superbug cases'

A hospital has succeeded in reducing the number of patients who develop superbugs while under its care.
New figures reveal that rates of MRSA and Clostridium difficile at Walsall Manor Hospital have declined, the Walsall Advertiser reports.
Last year, there were six cases of the conditions. This was a considerable fall on the previous 12-month period, when 21 cases were recorded.
Director at the medical centre Mike Browne said: "These excellent results are due to the hard work and commitment of all staff. We intend to further drive down those figures."
He added that reducing healthcare-acquired infections is the top priority for the medical centre and has been for a number of years.
Last April, staff at the facility began using the MRSA national screening programme.
MRSA is a bacteria that is commonly carried on skin. However, when it gets into the body though a break in the skin and is able to multiply, it can lead to health problems.
