A number of improvements are to be made to hospitals in Nottingham thanks to new investment.
NHS bosses in the area have revealed they intend to spend £24 million over the course of the next three years in a bid to increase the number of critically ill patients that can be treated, local paper the Evening Post reports.
The changes will take place in City Hospital and Queen's Medical Centre and they are being overseen by Nottingham University Hospitals Trust - which provides services to around 2.5 million people.
Although preparatory work has begun on the proposals, permission has not yet been granted.
Commenting on the plans, trust chief executive Dr Peter Homa said: "To provide the highest standards for our patients, we are working with our commissioners to become a regional trauma centre, providing fast-track care to the people of the East Midlands."
He added that the expansion of critical care beds is part of the organisation's wider goal.
