Research into dementia being conducted by a team of biomedical scientists at Edinburgh University has led to some promising results, it has been claimed.
The experts found that eating a balanced diet can help to lower a person's risk of developing the condition.
Published in the BMJ Clinical Evidence, the results show that tackling factors such as obesity and high cholesterol in middle-age could reduce the chance of getting dementia by around 20 per cent.
Responding to the findings, Alison Carnage, a spokeswoman for the Alzheimer's Research Trust, said they are welcome.
She added: "I think it really highlights the evidence that leading a healthy lifestyle, taking regular exercise and eating a healthy diet can help lower someone's risk of dementia."
In addition, remaining fit in this way can also reduce people's chances of developing other medical conditions, such as heart disease and strokes, the expert went on to note.
