A scheme under which people with pharmacy jobs are trained in allergy testing is a success, it has been claimed.
Under the terms of the initiative, the National Pharmacy Association (NPA) is developing the skills of such professionals so they can provide screening for customers.
In 2008, the organisation - which is a trade association serving community pharmacies - began training English pharmacists.
Last year, the project was expanded to those in Wales and Scotland and the association aims to extend it to Northern Ireland by the end of this year.
Commenting on the progress of the scheme, press officer at the NPA Mark Beckett said it is "going really well".
He added: "It has proved to be something that people really want; it is a service that is on people's doorsteps."
Mr Beckett went on to note that there are only a small number of specialist allergy centres, so pharmacies can provide an additional primary care option.
