Biomedical scientists in the US have found evidence that taking aspirin may lower women's risks of developing cancer.
The research was conducted at the Harvard Medical School and it revealed that over-50s who consume one pill a day had a reduced chance of getting breast and ovarian cancers.
It is thought that the drug can reduce the levels of the hormone oestrogen present in females, which is known to fuel tumour growth.
The findings were based on the analysis of data taken from 800 volunteers.
Dr Margaret Gates, leader of the study - which appeared in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention - said: "These results suggest that among postmenopausal women, regular users of aspirin and other analgesics may have lower oestrogen levels."
Breast cancer is now the most common form of the disease in Britain, according to Cancer Research UK.
In 2006, more than 45,000 women were diagnosed with the condition, it claims.
