Replacing saturated fats with more healthy options can reduce the risk of heart disease, new research has confirmed.
Conducted by a team of scientists at Harvard Medical School, the study showed that substituting such lipids with alternatives like polyunsaturated fats can cut the risk of cardiac problems by a fifth.
According to the experts involved, people should get no more than 11 per cent of their energy from saturated fats because such things increase the levels of bad cholesterol.
In contrast, polyunsaturated fats raise the levels of good cholesterol present in individuals' bodies.
Commenting on the issue, lead researcher Dariush Mozaffarian said: "Our findings suggest that polyunsaturated fats would be a preferred replacement for saturated fats for better heart health."
According to the NHS, coronary heart disease is the nation's biggest killer and around 300,000 people have a heart attack each year, with some such occurrences resulting in fatalities.
