A former England footballer has promoted the work conducted by biomedical scientists.
Speaking at an open session hosted by the Oxford Biomedical Research Centre at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Geoff Thomas said it is crucial that people get involved with scientific research, the Oxford Mail reports.
The ex-Crystal Palace captain has himself benefited from the work of people in the field, having recovered from chronic myeloid leukaemia in 2003.
A rare type of cancer, the disease affects around 700 people in the UK each year and is mainly found in adults.
His life was saved thanks to an operation in which his sister gave him a bone marrow transplant.
This experience led him to establish the Geoff Thomas Foundation, which aims to make sure that scientific research is applied at patients' bedsides.
The former sportsman spoke to attendees at the event about his experiences with leukaemia and how to help beat it.
