Refer an Cardiac Physiologist
Friday 19th March 2010
A cardiac expert has developed an application for the iPhone which is intended to help people perform resuscitation on heart attack victims.
In association with the Resuscitation Council (UK) and iMobileMedic.com, Dr Daniel Low, a consultant anaesthetist at the Royal United Hospital in Bath, devised the free iResus app.
It provides users with on-screen, step-by-step guidance concerning how to deal with such emergencies.
Commenting on the idea, Dr Low said: "Even though doctors and nurses are trained to deal with someone having a cardiac arrest, it's not a situation they face every day."
He added that he hopes both medics and patients will benefit from using the service, which provides information such as how many chest compressions should be performed.
According to the NHS, heart attacks predominantly occur in people over the age of 45 and are more common among men than women.
Around 111,000 such incidents occur in England each year, it notes.
