CQC issues hospital hygiene warning

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has issued a warning concerning hygiene standards in UK hospitals.
Of 167 trusts it investigated last year, 42 were found to be in breach of NHS registration requirements for failing to meet standards.
In addition, four of the 11 ambulance trusts investigated violated the terms of contracts in regards to cleanliness.
Meanwhile, 36 trusts were not providing areas to decontaminate instruments and 13 were said to have failed to keep clinical areas clean.
The CQC, which is the independent regulator of all health and adult social care in England, now has powers to impose tough penalties on organisations failing to adhere to hygiene codes.
Its head of national inspection Nigel Ellis said: "Good infection control takes constant vigilance - and meeting that every day, for every patient, is an ongoing challenge for the NHS."
He added that his organisation has found evidence of a direct risk to patients and has intervened where necessary.
