New technique 'may offer alternative to open heart surgery'

A new technique has been developed which may provide an alternative to open heart surgery.
The procedure, which could impact on the work of those with UK cardiac jobs, involves a small clip that is fitted using a minor procedure.
Abbott's investigational MitraClip system has been put forward as an effective way of repairing leaky mitral valves, which are a common condition.
A study found that patients who had the device fitted were less likely to suffer complications in the following month and were at a lower risk of stroke, blood transfusion and death.
Responding to the development, Dr Iain Simpson, vice president of education and research at the British Cardiovascular Society, said it is "encouraging".
He added: "Some patients will always be more suited to having a surgical operation but there is no doubt that this could provide effective treatment for many more patients."
The clip is one of a series of developing techniques being used to repair and replace heart valves, Dr Simpson went on to note.
