Biomedical researchers based in the US have made a connection between rates of prostate cancer and hair loss.
According to the team, males who begin experiencing baldness at a young age are less likely to develop the disease, the Telegraph reports.
The scientists, who published their findings in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, found that those who begin to shed their locks earlier have a 45 per cent reduced chance of developing the condition.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, Professor Jonathan Wright from the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle said that initially the results were "surprising".
"But we found that early onset baldness was associated with a 29 per cent to 45 per cent reduction in their relative risk of prostate cancer," he added.
Figures cited by Cancer Research UK suggest that rates of the disease have tripled in Britain over the last 30 years and more than 35,000 men were diagnosed with it in 2006.
