Contraceptive pill 'reduces risk of heart disease'

In news which may be of particular relevance to those with cardiac physiology jobs, it has been revealed that women who take the contraceptive pill have a reduced risk of suffering heart problems.
According to research published on bmj.com, female patients who have used it are less likely to die from any cause.
As well as heart disease, this included cancers and other medical problems.
The research has roots tracing back to 1968, when the Royal College of General Practitioners - which is a membership body of family doctors - began examining the issue.
Commenting on the discovery, Professor Philip Hannaford from the University of Aberdeen said many women are likely to feel reassured.
However, in a warning to people reading the results, he added: "Our findings might not reflect the experience of women using oral contraceptives today, if currently available preparations have a different risk than earlier products."
