Proposals that would enable pharmacies to open for 100 hours a week have been criticised by one industry practitioner.
New laws which allow supermarkets to open such medication dispensaries without licenses may jeopardise other local pharmacies, according to chief executive of the Co-operative Group Peter Marks, Crain's Manchester Business reports.
Speaking at a National Business Awards UK event, he suggested that big retail chains can run them at a loss, which is not an option for most operators.
"The supermarkets see it as footfall generators. We will lobby against 100-hour pharmacies," he said.
If the pharmacy sector is deregulated, there will be many closures, Mr Marks added.
He pointed to the example of the Post Office as a potential precursor.
Recently, Richard Thomas, who runs a chain of five pharmacies in Swindon, claimed that it is becoming more difficult for him to access the drugs he needs from suppliers, the Swindon Advertiser reported.
