Refer an Cardiac Physiologist
Tuesday 9th March 2010
New research being undertaken into the effects of certain beverages on heart health may lead to discoveries concerning the onset of cardiac conditions, those behind the project have said.
A team of scientists at University College London (UCL) claim to have created a ultrasound technique which effectively simulates the stresses placed on damaged cardiac myocytes, the Engineer reports.
They plan to eventually use the technology to create a cardio-protective treatment.
Professor Paul Townsend, one of the investigators involved in the project, said: "This work could be valuable for a range of research being carried out into heart disease."
Currently, the experts at UCL - which has a total of 4,000 academic and research staff working for it - are using rodent cells.
Eventually, however, they intend to transfer the technique into human cardiac myocytes in order to enhance the accuracy of their results and take the research in a new direction.
