Podiatrists are "firefighting" over diabetes, expert says

Podiatrists across the country are "firefighting" when it comes to dealing with cases of diabetes because provisions for the detection of the condition are patchy, it has been claimed.
According to Louise Stewart, a specialist podiatrist in Manchester's foot clinic, such professionals are not provided with sufficient support when it comes to spotting cases of the disease, the Independent reports.
The news provider went on to note that in some areas, there are teams in operation which are intended as a means of reducing the need for the removal of legs due to diabetes.
These groups include podiatrists, dieticians and other experts and have been successful in suppressing the demand for amputations, it suggested.
Meanwhile, Ms Stewart remarked: "It is shocking that more than 100 limbs, in patients as young as 35, are lost every week. It is a devastating loss which could often be avoided."
A long-term, chronic condition caused by too much glucose in the blood, diabetes affects around 2.3 million people in the UK and as many as half a million may have it without knowing, the NHS states.
