Refer an Cardiac Physiologist
Thursday 4th March 2010
A medical expert has noted that changes to people's lifestyles can reduce the risk of them suffering strokes.
Cathy Ross, senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, suggested that everyone should be aware of the factors that can increase the chances of such problems and should take steps to adjust their routines accordingly.
She stated: "Any lifestyle interventions are likely to have an impact on the ten year risk assessment performed by GPs."
Her comments come in the wake of research conducted by a team at Ben Gurion University, which showed that healthy long-term weight loss diets can significantly reverse carotid artery atherosclerosis, which is a risk factor for strokes.
Low-fat, Mediterranean and low-carbohydrate diets were all found to be successful in this respect.
Ms Ross went on to state that the study illustrates the fact the weight loss has beneficial effects on health in general and on cardiovascular health in particular.
