Refer an Audiologist
Wednesday 3rd March 2010
An audiologist has said that people who are concerned over the impact taking painkillers may have on their hearing should ask for a test.
Crystal Rolfe, an audiology specialist at the Royal National Institute for the Deaf, made her comments in the wake of new research from the US which found that taking drugs such as paracetamol on a regular basis can increase the risk of going deaf.
According to the team, consuming such medication at least twice a week doubles the risk of mild to severe hearing loss prior to the age of 50, the Daily Express reports.
Due to be published in the March edition of the American Journal of Medicine, the study was based on results collected over a period of 24 years.
Responding to the suggestions, Ms Rolfe advised those concerned to take action soon.
She added: "If you are worried that the medication you are taking could be affecting your hearing, you should consult your doctor, who will discuss your concerns with you."
Figures cited by the NHS suggest that 72 per cent of people who are hearing impaired are over the age of 60.
