Biomedical scientists have developed a test which they claim can predict how well chemotherapy will work in cancer patients.
A team, which included individuals at Cancer Research UK's London Research Institute, say they have identified a number of genes which could be used to estimate how effective the drug paclitaxel is on breast cancer sufferers.
It is hoped that their findings - published in the Lancet Oncology - will open the way for treatments of the disease to be targeted at those who would benefit the most.
Study leader Dr Charles Swanton remarked: "Our research shows it is now possible to rapidly pinpoint genes which prevent cancer cells from being destroyed by anti-cancer drugs."
He added that the challenge will be to apply the methods to other drugs in cancer medicine.
According to Cancer Research UK, more than 45,500 women were diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK in 2006 and rates of the disease have risen by 50 per cent over the last 25 years.
