Shoes can aggravate bunions, podiatrist says

A podiatrist has pointed out that, while shoes cannot cause bunions, they can aggravate the problem.
According to Glasgow-based medical practitioner Aileen Kelly, it is crucial for people to select appropriate footwear if they want to avoid such issues, the Daily Record reports.
She remarked: "If you've noticed a bump developing where your big toe joins the foot, it may be time to switch your footwear."
Ms Kelly went on to advise people to buy shoes that fit the shape of their feet, adding that consumers should get measured both for width of foot and depth of toe.
Heeled boots provide support for the ankle joint and shoes with straps or laces are good, she concluded.
Her comments follow those made earlier this year by Lorraine Jones from the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists, which claims to represent around 10,000 private practitioners, NHS podiatrists and students.
She said that shoes should provide toes with room to move and heels should be no higher than 4cm.
