Refer an Cardiac Physiologist
Friday 12th February 2010
The services of people who have cardiac physiology jobs may be in greater demand during the winter months, comments made by one expert suggest.
According to British Heart Foundation Cardiac nurse Cathy Ross, patients are more at risk of dying from heart conditions when it is cold.
She said: "This may be because cold temperatures can lead to an increase in heart rate and blood pressure, which can trigger an angina attack."
Also, studies indicate that blood becomes thicker in cold weather, which can result in clots forming and lead to a heart attack, stroke or sudden cardiac death, she added.
Ms Ross went on to recommend that people dress warmly during winter and said they should avoid spending long periods of time in very low temperatures.
Her comments were made to coincide with National Fuel Poverty Awareness Day, which is being supported by government's chief medical officer Sir Liam Donaldson and Dr Miriam Stoppard OBE.
