There needs to be more biomedical research conducted into the causes of pancreatic cancer, it has been claimed.
According to Dr Adrienne Morgan, Cancer52 secretariat, the mortality rate for the disease is one of the highest among all forms of the condition.
Her comments were made in the wake of the release of a study published in the Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention journal, which revealed that people who drank two or more soft drinks per week had an increased risk of pancreatic cancer compared with those who did not.
Dr Morgan welcomed the study, pointing out that it shows there is an association between the consumption of soft drinks and the medical condition, not that such beverages cause it.
The expert went on to state: "In 2007, the largest cancer research funders in the UK put 1.6 per cent of their research funding into pancreatic cancer, despite it causing five per cent of all cancer deaths."
