Study into diabetic retinopathy 'is helpful'

A study conducted by a biomedical scientist into diabetic retinopathy has been described as useful.
It has long been known that high blood sugar levels associated with diabetes can damage blood vessels in the eye.
Now, a US-based researcher has discovered the process that causes retinal cells to die and it is hoped that new treatments can be developed that stop the destruction.
Susanne Mohr, associate professor of physiology at Michigan State University, was responsible for the findings.
Responding to them, Dr Iain Frame, director of research at leading health charity Diabetes UK, said they are a step forward.
He remarked: "The researchers have helpfully outlined what the next steps are to see if their findings will help prevent diabetic retinopathy or stop it progressing - but we have some way to go."
It is too early to say whether these findings will have any direct effects on the prevention and treatment of diabetic retinopathy, he added.
