There needs to be an increase in the level of funding for biomedical research focussed on dementia, it has been claimed.
According to a report published by the Alzheimer's Research Trust, spending on such studies is a 13th of that spent on cancer.
This is despite the fact that the average dementia patient costs five time more to care for than people with cancer.
Chief executive at the Alzheimer's Research Trust Rebecca Wood remarked: "The true impact of dementia has been ignored for too long. The UK's dementia crisis is worse than we feared."
She went on to describe the condition as the "greatest medical challenge of the 21st century".
A syndrome associated with an ongoing decline of the brain, dementia affects around 570,000 people living in the UK, the NHS suggests.
It impacts on a variety of mental functions, including thinking, language, memory, understanding and judgement and patients can experience problems controlling their emotions.
