A biomedical researcher from the US has developed what he hopes may the first low-cost dual vaccine against malaria and cholera.
Henry Daniell, who led a team at the University of Central Florida, genetically engineered tobacco and lettuce plants to produce the vaccine.
He remarked: "I'm very encouraged because our technique works well and provides an affordable way to get vaccines to people who need them most and can least afford them."
The expert went on to point out that producing medication in plants is less expensive that using traditional methods because it requires less labour and technology.
His team's results are published in this month's Plant Biotechnology.
Human trials will be required before the vaccine can be certified as safe to use.
A tropical disease passed to humans by mosquitoes, malaria is present in more than 100 countries and it takes only one bite for people to become infected.
