Biomedical research conducted by a team in the US may lead to improvements in the treatment of breast cancer, it is hoped.
The scientists found that adjuvant chemotherapy for breast cancer after surgery has effectively lowered metastatic recurrence rates.
They published their findings in the Nature Medicine journal this month.
Responding to the development, a spokeswoman for Against Breast Cancer said it may help prevent patients with the disease from receiving ineffectual treatment from healthcare providers.
She remarked: "If confirmed, [the] discovery seems an important step forward. The blunderbuss approach of using chemotherapy is over."
However, more research must be conducted and the observation needs to be confirmed on a larger number of patients, she went on to suggest.
According to the spokesperson, there are financial restrictions which can impede rapid progress and effective treatment when it comes to dealing with cancer among sufferers in the UK.
