Vitamin D may possess qualities which help people avoid developing bowel cancer, a team of biomedical scientists has found.
According to researchers from a number of institutions across Europe, individuals with the highest concentrations of the substance in their blood had a 40 per cent reduced risk of getting the cancer compared with those who had the lowest levels of the vitamin.
Publishing their results in the British Medical Journal, the scientists concluded that, while more studies need to be conducted, initial results indicate that vitamin D may be associated with a protective effect against bowel cancer.
Responding to the results, Ed Yong, head of health evidence and information at Cancer Research UK, said: "Enjoying the sun safely while taking care not to burn should help people strike a balance between making enough vitamin D and avoiding a higher risk of skin cancer."
According to the charity, bowel cancer is the third most common in the UK and more than 37,500 people are diagnosed with it each year.
