Very low calorie diets 'effective for obese people'

New research has revealed that those suffering from obesity could benefit from taking up a very low calorie diet (VLCD).
Conducted by the Centre for Obesity Research and Epidemiology at Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, the trial showed that patients drastically reducing their calorie intake had an "energy deficit" which speeds up weight loss.
When compared to conventional diets, the very low calorie options can help people lose weight quicker over a short period of time, although Professor Iain Broom, who led the study, admitted that results were the same over the long term.
"It's a different way of tackling obesity. There were some health risks in the 1960s and the 70s with the VLCDs and that was because they were inappropriately constituted and this did cause problems. This is not the case with modern VLCDs," Professor Bloom added.
NHS statistics show that in the past 15 years the number of cases of obesity in England has risen 15 per cent to 24 per cent, while men are more likely to be overweight than women.
