Children should be involved in cooking, dietician says

In order to increase the likelihood that youngsters develop healthy eating habits, they should be encouraged to cook from an early age.
This is according to Elizabeth Pivonka, a registered dietician who heads Produce for Better Health Foundation, the Fort Worth Star Telegram reports.
The organisation operates on a non-profit basis and aims to provide consumers with the motivation to eat more fruits and vegetables with the purpose of improving public health.
Ms Pivonka said: "If kids help with the cooking, they are more inclined to eat what's on the table."
Engaging children in meal preparation encourages them to value the importance of nutritious and balanced meals, she added.
It is possible to make meal planning and preparation a family activity, the expert went on to point out.
Youngsters of pre-school age can help by measuring ingredients and stirring, Ms Pivonka suggested, while older children can make simple recipes as long as they are properly supervised.
