The increase in British people with obesity may mean that recommended doses for patients requiring antibiotics need to be boosted to remain effective, it has been said.
An editorial in the Lancet journal attached to studies by Greek and US scientists has claimed that current doses are not enough to clear infections in larger people, increasing the risk of resistance to the drugs.
According to the BBC, around 25 per cent of UK adults are classified as obese and the proportion of fat in the body can have an effect on how useful antibiotics are in inhibiting the growth of bacteria in infections.
Professor Steve Field, chair of the Royal College of GPs, told the news provider: "Patients are getting taller and larger and it does seem right that patients are given the appropriate strength of drug."
The Royal College of GPs currently runs its Patient Partnership Group, which takes into account patients' views when judging the quality of care guidance within the healthcare sector.
