Fundraising initiative launched to buy cardiac equipment

A scheme has been launched with the aim of raising enough money to buy cardiac equipment which would be used in locations across Scarborough.
The British Heart Foundation is aiming to get £54,340 through the initiative, which is being run in partnership with the Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust and the Cardiac Science Corporation, the Scarborough Evening News reports.
Cash raised by the charity, which is involved in pioneering research, prevention activity and helps to ensure quality care and support for people living with heart disease, will be used to purchase defibrillators.
Commenting on the need for such equipment, Paul Stevens from the Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust, remarked: "When a person's heart stops there is a limited period in which to use a defibrillator to deliver a shock to the heart in an attempt to regain a normal rhythm and a strong pulse."
He added that with more defibrillators in public places, it will be possible to save a greater number of lives.
