New research has suggested that those who drink green tea could reduce the risk of developing lung cancer.
Scientists at Shan Medical University in Taiwan found that participants who drank a cup of green tea every day had a significantly reduced chance of getting cancer, regardless of whether they smoked or not.
According to the BBC, those with certain genes were most affected by the herbal beverage, however the researchers were quick to add that the results do not diminish previous studies which link smoking to lung cancer.
Yinka Ebo, spokesperson for Cancer Research UK, told the news provider: "Smoking tobacco fills your lungs with around 80 cancer-causing chemicals. Drinking green tea is not going to compensate for that. The best thing a smoker can do to reduce their risk of lung cancer, and more than a dozen other cancer types, is to quit."
Lung cancer is the second most common form of the disease, with around 39,000 people being diagnosed with the condition during 2006 equivalent to 107 every day.
