Refer an Cardiac Physiologist
Wednesday 13th January 2010
New research has claimed that a chemical used in the production of babies' bottles, CDs and tin cans could increase the risk of heart attacks.
Conducted by the University of Exeter and its Peninsula Medical School, the study revealed that those with high levels of bisphenol A (BPA), used to soften plastics, are 50 per cent more likely to suffer cardiac problems.
The controversial substance has been linked to health problems in the past - including infertility, breast cancer and prostate cancer and is also contained in sunglasses, plastic utensils and mobile phones.
Professor Tamara Galloway, senior author of the paper, explained: "The risks associated with exposure to BPA may be small, but they are relevant to very large numbers of people. This information is important since it provides a great opportunity for intervention to reduce the risks."
The Peninsula Medical College of Medicine and Dentistry aims to undertake research and education in the clinical field.
