MRSA programme to be trialled in Scotland

Hospitals in the north of Scotland are to trial an extended screening programme for MRSA.
A Scottish government initiative, the scheme will see medical centres in the Highlands testing patients by the end of this month, the Press and Journal reports.
The project is being implemented by NHS Highland, which serves a population of around 398,790 dispersed over an area of 12,507 square miles.
Nurse director at the organisation Heidi May remarked: "The screening will involve a simple swab taken from inside the nose as part of a pre-admission assessment."
She pointed out that the procedure is already standard for its pre-operative assessment clinics, so the development is "merely an extension" of this.
If people receive positive results for MRSA, Ms May added, they will be contacted by NHS Highland to discuss the best route forward.
Treatment can be administered to some people, but this is not recommended for everyone, the medical expert went on to state.
