A group of biomedical scientists have discovered a link between the prolonged viewing of television and an increased risk of death.
The research, which was published in the journal Circulation, found that even for people who exercised regularly, the risk of death went up the longer they spent in front of the TV.
According to the team, the problem is sitting still for long periods of time.
It was discovered that individuals who said they watched four or more hours a day were 46 per cent more likely to die of any cause and 80 per cent more likely to die of cardiovascular disease than people who spent less than two hours a day in front on the TV.
The project was led by Dr David Dunstan, a researcher at the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute in Melbourne - which was created in 2008 following the merger of the Baker Heart Research Institute and the International Diabetes Institute.
He remarked: "It's the incidental moving around, walking around, standing up and utilising muscles that [doesn't happen] when we're plunked on a couch in front of a television."
