Refer an Pharmacist
Monday 11th January 2010
The government has launched a consultation concerning possible new rules under which pharmacists would be able to dispense generic drugs against prescriptions for selected branded products.
This week, the Department of Health started a 12-week process of collecting opinions on the idea, Chemist+Druggist reports.
There have been concerns among certain industry practitioners concerning the proposals.
For example, the Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee (PSNC) has stated it is unsure how the plan would "operate in practice".
Sue Sharpe, chief executive of the organisation - which aims to secure the best possible NHS service opportunities, remuneration, terms and conditions for NHS pharmacy contractors based in England and Wales - said problems could occur.
She remarked: "It could create substantial difficulties for pharmacists dealing with patients."
The PSNC claims to represent in the region of 11,000 pharmacy contractors and it liaises with the Department of Health to negotiate the contractual terms under which industry practitioners operate.
