Register as an Dietitian
Thursday 7th January 2010
Young people with more body fat tend to have thicker bones, researchers have discovered.
According to a team of scientists working at Bristol University, fat mass is important in building up the skeleton.
They studied more than 4,000 15-year-olds and found that the connection was particularly marked in girls.
The experts warned that people who engage in dieting and are too thin while they are young may put themselves at an increased risk of osteoporosis.
A condition that causes bones to become thin and weak, it affects around three million people in the UK and causes more than 230,000 fractures each year.
"There is a good deal of pressure on teenage girls to be thin, but they need to be aware that this could endanger their developing skeleton," stated research leader Jon Tobias.
In order to offset the effect of fat loss on their bones, people should include high impact exercise such as running and jumping in their routines, he added.
