Biomedical scientists to trial leukaemia vaccine

Biomedical scientists will be testing a vaccine for leukaemia on humans for the first time in a clinical trial this year.
If the test is successful, it is hoped the drug can be used to prevent the relapse of leukaemia in patients following a bone marrow transplant or chemotherapy, reports the Telegraph.
The treatment uses blood cells that have been manipulated by biomedical scientists to programme the patient's immune system to destroy cancer cells.
A small number of patients at King's College London with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) will be treated as part of the trial, with results set to be published in the Cancer Immunology, Immunotherapy journal in the near future.
AML accounts for around a third of all cases of leukaemia diagnosed in the UK, according to Cancer Research.
The charity notes that 19 people in Britain are diagnosed daily with this type of cancer, which is the 12th most common in the UK.
