Refer an Cardiac Physiologist
Tuesday 5th January 2010
A man who suffers from a condition which means his aorta is in danger of splitting has created a device to strengthen it.
So successful is the new cardiac treatment that engineer Tal Golesworthy has teamed up with his doctors and set up a firm to market the technology.
A made-to-measure knitted polyester sleeve, it is wrapped around the blood vessel to provide additional support.
Mr Golesworthy has Marfan syndrome, which is a genetic condition that affects the body's connective tissues.
Parents with the disorder have a 50 per cent chance of passing it on to their children.
So far, the treatment has been carried out on 19 people in addition to Mr Golesworthy and more patients are booked in to have the procedure.
Medical director at the British Heart Foundation Peter Weissberg said: "We welcome it as a new development, but we have to be certain these things are safe in the long as well as the short term, before we can recommend them."
