Initiative implemented to improve hospital hygiene in Wales

A scheme has been established in Wales to help medical centres in the country reduce outbreaks of superbugs such as MRSA and clostridium difficile.
Each month, hospitals have to submit reports to the assembly government concerning the number of cases identified, the South Wales Argus reports.
No targets have been set as yet, but the publication suggests that infection control experts are taking a proactive approach to the issue.
For example, the Royal Gwent saw a 41 per cent reduction in the number of superbugs contracted by its patients during the first six months of 2009-10 compared with the same period a year earlier.
Progress at the hospital - which is located on Cardiff Road in Newport - has been linked to closer monitoring, more responsible prescribing of antibiotics and good hygiene standards by frontline staff.
Liz Waters from the Gwent Healthcare Trust stated: "The work in developing improved infection control measures will help to ensure both our hospital and community settings are as safe from infections as possible."
