Biomedical scientists have become involved in a study which is hoped will help in the fight against hospital superbugs.
Led by Derrick Crook, a clinical microbiologist at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, the team is tracking the genetic fingerprints of germs, the Times reports.
It is hoped that it will be possible to monitor the spread of infection and identify the source of outbreaks of the illnesses.
One of the infections that will be examined is MRSA, which affects people in hospital more than in the general population because they tend to be weaker and often have entry points - such as surgical wounds - for the bacteria to get into their bodies.
Commenting on the research, Mr Crook remarked: "We want to forensically describe how germs are transmitted and work out better ways of intervening and interrupting that transmission."
This will help with the identification of "emerging threats", he added.
