Pharmacists 'should be first point of call'

Pharmacists are capable of assisting patients with a range of medical conditions and can often be seen as a first point of call, it has been recommended.
Commenting on the issue, NHS 24 medical director Dr George Crooks said people should check the opening times of their local pharmacies over the New Year weekend and make sure they are fully stocked up on medicines, the Aberdeen Press and Journal reports.
He added: "Pharmacists provide a range of services to deal with minor illnesses and ailments and in many cases can provide something over the counter to help ease symptoms."
NHS 24 - which is an online and telephone-based service intended to answer patients' questions concerning health and to offer advice - recommends that people visit pharmacists as a "first step" and only make appointments with GPs if they have a persistent condition, Dr Crooks went on to state.
