Biomedical research owes a considerable debt to a charity dedicated to raising money for the purposes of furthering knowledge of human health, it has been pointed out.
An article published in the Times draws attention to the fact that the Wellcome Trust provides around £600 million each year for studies in the scientific discipline.
One of the main research centres for the organisation is located near to Cambridge, the publication notes.
In 1992, the Sanger Institute was established in collaboration with the Medical Research Council.
The Times states: "It has many of [the] world's most powerful computers and was responsible for almost a quarter of the total sequences in the Human Genome Project."
This was a "multinational collaboration" to map more than 20,000 human genes, it adds.
According to the Welcome Trust, which employs over 500 staff, the fact that its mission is broadly defined means it is able to respond flexibly to medical needs and scientific opportunities.
